Consumer Prices in OECD Area Rise 0.2% in Year to October 2009

Consumer prices in the OECD area rose by 0.2 % in the year to October 2009, a positive rate for the first time since May 2009. Month-on-month, prices increased by 0.1% in October, after remaining stable in September 2009.

Consumer prices for energy were down by 9.2% in the year to October 2009, following a fall of 13.9% in September. Consumer prices for food fell by 1.0% in the year to October 2009, compared with a fall of 0.4% in September. Excluding food and energy, consumer prices rose by 1.6% in the year to October 2009, after 1.5% in September 2009.

In the euro area, annual inflation (HICP) was -0.1% in October 2009, up from -0.3% in September. Month-on-month, the HICP increased by 0.2% in October, after being stable in September. Excluding food and energy, the euro area annual inflation rate (HICP) remained stable at 1.2% in October, the same as in September.

In the United States, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) fell by 0.2% over the year to October 2009, compared to a decline of 1.3% in the year to September.

In Japan, consumer prices decreased by -2.5% over the year to October, after a decline of 2.2% in September.

Over the year to October, annual inflation was 1.5% in the United Kingdom, 0.3% in Italy, 0.1% in Canada, 0.0% in Germany, and -0.2% in France.
