Automotive CEOs surveyed by PwC in the fourth quarter of 2010, are confident that growth is on the rise in 2011. This represents a full 90 percent of automotive CEOs indicating that they are somewhat confident or very confident in achieving revenue growth in the next 12 months, which is nearly as high as their opinion before the global financial downturn in 2008, according to PwC's 14th Annual Global CEO Survey: automotive industry summary.

Mortgage rates eased back following a big move up last week, with the benchmark conforming 30-year fixed mortgage rate falling to 5.16 percent, according to Bankrate.com's weekly national survey. The average 30-year fixed mortgage has an average of 0.42 discount and origination points.

In December 2010 the OECD area unemployment rate was 8.5%, down 0.1 percentage point from November. The OECD rate (now including Chile, Estonia, Israel and Slovenia, the four countries that joined OECD in 2010) has been stable at around 8.5% since February 2010, despite diverging trends at the national level. New data show that the unemployment rate for the United States fell by 0.4 percentage point (the second consecutive decline) to 9.0% in January 2011, while the rate for Canada rose by 0.2 percentage point to 7.8%.

Most global consumers (52%) describe Valentine's Day as "too commercialized," according to new research with Survey Sampling International's (SSI) global online panels. Only in the U.S. and China did more consumers describe Valentine's Day as a "holiday for couples."

Worldwide mobile device sales to end users totaled 1.6 billion units in 2010, a 31.8 percent increase from 2009, according to Gartner, Inc. Smartphone sales to end users were up 72.1 percent from 2009 and accounted for 19 percent of total mobile communications device sales in 2010.

Merger and acquisition (M&A) deal volume in the global metals sector showed improvement in 2010, rising to 101 deals, up 7 percent from 2009, according to the PwC US report, "Forging ahead: Fourth-quarter 2010 global metals industry mergers and acquisitions analysis". However, deal value declined slightly, dropping 2 percent to $86.6 billion in 2010 from $88.1 billion in 2009.
